An Interview with the Founder

Meet Jasmine Keeney. She’s the founder of Kūlia Skincare, and her journey begins with her roots.

When did your passion for a non-toxic lifestyle begin?
I suppose it all began because I’ve had a lot of health problems since I was young. In my 20’s, I started on this personal journey of “how do I heal myself?” I went to doctor after doctor looking for a medical remedy that could help with things like lethargy and depression. And, over and over again I was dismissed and encouraged to carry on. I started to feel really disheartened by my interactions with western medicine and decided to take my health into my own hands, learning everything I could about the process of intentionally detoxing and healing my body.

And what did you come to find?
For me, I think many of my health issues stemmed from the fact that I was overly exposed to harmful chemicals as a young child. I was born and raised in rural Hawai’i and grew up on my family’s banana farm where I was exposed to harmful toxins on a daily basis. Due to my parents’ economic hardship and the demands of agricultural trading practices, my family relied on chemical fertilizers and pesticides to ensure crop yields year after year.

So, how did you begin your journey of healing?
As a first step, I decided that I was determined to understand the contents of everything that I was putting in, on, or near my body. I began detoxing many of my household cleaning products and became a vegetarian for a very long time. I started an herbalism course and was learning about herbs, their benefits and sourcing ingredients. At that time, my skin was having reactions to my “organic” eye and face oils. So began my skincare journey. I read and researched literally every ingredient on the labels, which led me to a very frustrating realization: a lot of “organic” and “natural” skincare products weren’t fully clean at all. I saw such an ugly side to the beauty industry and realized there was such a lack of education around this common issue. I wanted to figure out how to find the most healing, nutrient-dense, and quality ingredients to support my skin to age gracefully and naturally.

When did you decide to launch your own skincare company?
I decided to formulate my own products when I couldn’t find anything that I truly trusted enough to put on my skin. After studying herbalism and self taught aromatherapy for years, I decided I wanted to create something that was made with excellence, beautiful and nourishing ingredients, and ultimately products that are rooted in consciousness.

I started Kūlia to lighten the overwhelming toxic burden from modern life, with the hope that everyone who invites Kūlia into their lives feels nourished, loved, and cared for.

What’s unique about your formulas?
Kūlia means “to strive” and that is my mission. I am highly involved in every step of the way, and that begins by partnering with people who are dedicated to making the highest quality and most sustainable ingredients. Each ingredient has been carefully selected- from our carrier oils to the essential oils and down to the crystals in each bottle. Each product has intentional aromatherapy benefits to help ease the mind, uplift our moods and care for us. The crystals we chose are amethyst and rose quartz which support the clearing of negative energies, help open up the heart to love and healing, and impart the wisdom that comes from being around for thousands of years.

And, even your packaging is sustainable, right?
Yes, I really want to make a meaningful change in the skincare industry. And, that means taking a holistic approach to all parts of the process. Our packaging contains fully recyclable componentry, FSC paper, and soy-based inks.

What’s next for Kūlia?
As the world around us shifts and society continues to reinvent itself, I’m striving to grow Kūlia with a relentless focus on a search for truth. Through our products, our formulation process and our mission, Kūlia as a brand, aims to embody the very essence of what it means to thrive alongside our world’s natural resources.
